Graham Zellick read law at Cambridge and was then Ford Foundation Fellow at the Stanford Law School in California.
He became Professor of Public Law at Queen Mary and Westfield College at the age of 34 and later served as Head of the Department of Law and Dean of the Faculty of Laws. He was subsequently Principal of the College, the third largest in the University of London, and in particular brought about its merger with two medical schools, Bart’s and The London.
He was Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of London for six years before becoming Chairman of the Criminal Cases Review Commission, an appointment made by The Queen on the recommendation of the Prime Minister. In January 2009, he became the first President of the Valuation Tribunal for England, appointed by the Lord Chancellor on the recommendation of the Judicial Appointments Commission.
Dr Zellick is a barrister and Master of the Bench (and former Reader) of the Middle Temple, an Honorary Fellow of the Society of Advanced Legal Studies, an Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, an Honorary Fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, the Royal Academy of Music and Leo Baeck College, and a Fellow of Heythrop College, University of London, and holder of honorary degrees from New York University, the University of Birmingham, University of London and Richmond, the American University in London.
He has been Editor of Public Law and European Human Rights Reports, was one of the first Electoral Commissioners, a JP in Inner London, a member of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Appeals Panel, the Competition Appeal Tribunal, the Data Protection Tribunal, the Lord Chancellor’s Legal Aid Advisory Committee and health authorities.
He is Emeritus Professor of Law in the University of London.
He was appointed CBE in the Birthday Honours 2009 for services to the administration of justice and an honorary Queen's Counsel in 2010.
