Anthony Banfield trained as a chartered surveyor with the District Valuer's Office and has worked in local government, private practice and for property companies. Whilst with P & O Properties, he gained considerable experience of rent reviews as well as the management and refurbishment of a large covered shopping centre before being actively involved in the Chelsea Harbour development. He then became Managing Director of a property asset management company specialising in the management of property portfolios throughout the UK for privately owned property companies before joining the College of Estate Management at Reading, initially as a valuation tutor. He went on to become the College’s Valuation Team Leader and Director of Corporate Training and finally Director of Retail Studies.

In April 2010 he retired from the College to set up his own training and property management consultancy, Banfield Real Estate Solutions Ltd.

He has set up and run specialist bespoke courses for a large number of companies from international plcs to small partnerships, presented conference papers and has regularly lectured throughout the world on subjects mainly related to valuation, property development, property management and shopping centres.

He is a Fellow of the RICS, a founder member of the Chinese Shopping Centres Council and was a member of the ICSC European Research Group 2009 - 2015.

For clients including RICS and National School of Government he helped to develop and presented one day workshops on topics such as Valuation Basics, DCF techniques, Development, Red Book, Rent Reviews, Commercial property management and leasing.. He is currently involved in the development of further training projects for various clients across the world.

Anthony revised, edited and contributed to the current edition of Stapletons Real Estate Management Practice as well as being involved in the preparation of the last edition of Parry’s Valuation Tables. In 2011 he took over authoring The valuer's guide to the Red Book for the RICS, the latest print version was published in January 2014 but he is currently producing an update version to cover the Red book 2017 for the RICS isurv. Potential future books include a valuation book to be entitled The Forensic Valuer and book provisionally titled A Banker's Guide to Property.
