Live updates as passengers urged to avoid London Waterloo due to major disruption on South West Trains

Train passengers are being urged to avoid London Waterloo after a points failure is causing major disruption to the South West Trains network.

The problem between Vauxhall and London Waterloo train means all trains running to and from these stations may be cancelled, delayed or revised.

The problem is expected to go on all day.

South West Trains is warning passengers that all peak trains this morning are likely to be very busy.

All passengers planning to travel between Reading and London Waterloo are urged to check National Rail enquiries before they travel.

These trains will end at Woking...

  • 06:26 Havant to London Waterloo - this train will only run between Havant and Woking
  • 06:47 Basingstoke to London Waterloo - this train will only run between Basingstoke and Woking

Limited service is running

A very limited service is now running to and from Waterloo, which is expected for the rest of today and tomorrow.

An investigation to establish the cause of the incident is underway. It would not be appropriate to speculate on the cause of the incident at this time.

Upgrade work to extend platforms at Waterloo continues.”

Work to re rail the train is ongoing

Work to ‘re-rail’ the train is underway this afternoon. Network Rail will then need to examine what, if any, damage was caused to the track.

The incident happened as the train was pulling away from its platform at Waterloo.

There were no injuries to the 23 passengers or two members of staff on board the train. The barrier train was in place to separate the ongoing engineering works at Waterloo from the operational train services.”

Passengers told to avoid travelling on Wednesday

A South West Trains spokesman said:

South West Trains and Network Rail are currently advising passengers not to travel to and from Waterloo today or tomorrow (Wednesday, August 16) after a passenger train struck a stationary barrier train at very low speed and became partially derailed at 5.40am this morning.”

London Waterloo: trains are unable to use platforms 1 to 13. This reduction in available platforms means that many services will need to terminate before London Waterloo and many services will start away from London Waterloo.

Most trains are experiencing severe delays and are subject to short notice alterations. Disruption to services is likely to persist until the end of service on Wednesday, August 16.

The company are asking people to hold tight for more updates.

The train company is actually enforcing queues at some stations.

Queuing systems are in place at Waterloo, Vauxhall, Clapham, Wimbledon, Raynes Park, New Malden, Surbiton, Esher, Woking, Wandsworth Town and Putney. This is to keep passengers safe and manage the number of customers on the platforms.

SWT trains are now advising against travel.

South West Trains have revealed the cancellations and terminations today.

These services will be cancelled:

  • London Waterloo to London Waterloo via Brentford and Twickenham.
  • London Waterloo to London Waterloo via Twickenham and Brentford.

These services will be terminated:

  • Trains from Exeter St. Davids to London Waterloo will terminate at Reading.
  • Trains from London Waterloo to Exeter St. Davids will start from Reading.

Customers may interchange with Great Western Railway services to London Paddington and use London Underground services between London Paddington and London Waterloo to complete your journey.
