AFC Wimbledon gets the green light to build new stadium

Sajid Javid has decided not to call in planning application for AFC Wimbledons new stadium.

The communities secretary has given the go ahead for AFC to go back to their home of south west London. The club's plan to build the £16m ,11,000 capacity stadium on the site of the former Greyhound Wimbledon Stadium was given the ok by Merton Council last year.

Chief executive Erik Samuelsson said of the plans

“At long last, we can start planning with confidence to give AFC Wimbledon a secure future at the heart of the community the club represents, as well as building many much-needed homes and providing a major boost to the economy of the area.

“After so many years in exile, the Dons are coming home!”

Leader of Merton Council, Stephen Alambritis, also expressed delight:

“This is fantastic news for the club and for Merton. We have always supported the return of AFC Wimbledon to home turf and now they and their legions of dedicated fans can look forward to the reality. We will also benefit from new homes and business opportunities for the area which is very exciting too.”

Boris Johnson put the plans back when he decided to review this decision after objections were received from Wandsworth council. However Sadiq Khan (current London Mayor) has gone against his predecessor's decision and given the club the green light.

Khan gave the OK to Merton Council to progress their plans, Wandsworth Council weren't happy with this and asked for the communities secretary to step in to fight their corner and pause the plan. However Sajid Javid has decided not to call in planning application for AFC Wimbledons new stadium.
